EchoLab presents the formulas and algorithms commonly used in the day-to-day operation of an echocardiography laboratory. Designed by a practicing cardiologist and echocardiographer, EchoLab provides a comprehensive framework for teaching the principles of quantitative echocardiography, or cardiac ultrasound, by demonstrating in detail the inter-relationships between these formulas. EchoLab is unique as an application for echocardiography in its wide scope and with its sharing of entered and calculated data between its many formulas (users do not need to re-enter data when shifting to a new calculation). EchoLab also displays all entered and calculated data with an assessment of each variable as normal or abnormal by adult criteria, if relevant. Available with each formula is a graphical display of mathematical equations, along with a reference to the medical literature.
An integrated, user-customized library allows viewing of files downloaded from the Web, uploaded from the user's computer using iTunes file sharing, imported as E-mail attachments, transferred from the photo album, or captured with the camera. Store scientific papers, slideshows, movies, photographs, schematics, and spreadsheets for convenient reference and teaching. Send any library file to a colleague as an E-mail attachment with a simple touch.
Calculations included in the application include:
• Aortic effective regurgitant orifice area

• Aortic valve area (from velocity and velocity-time integral)
• Aortic valve resistance
• Body mass index
• Body surface area
• Cardiac output and ejection fraction (area-length, Doppler, Dumesnil, Teichholz, and directly entered volume methods), with comparison of calculations among the methods
• Diastology assessment algorithm (qualitative assessment of left atrial pressure and left ventricular diastolic function)
• Hemodynamic summary
• Left atrial pressure
• Left atrial volume and index
• Left ventricular diastolic diameter index
• Left ventricular dP/dt

Note that EchoLab is a teaching and reference application, not a tool for clinical diagnosis, clinical decision-making, or echocardiography report generation.
What's New
An extensive update!
• Reference button for each calculation now opens a page of notes with relevant tips for echocardiographic imaging and calculation, along with one or more citations from the medical literature.
• New calculation: mitral regurgitant fraction calculated with the PISA method.
• Calculation of mitral regurgitant volume added to mitral effective regurgitant orifice area calculation (PISA method).
• Calculation of mitral regurgitant volume added to mitral regurgitant fraction calculation (stroke volume method).
• Calculation of aortic regurgitant volume added to aortic regurgitant fraction calculation.
• Calculation of left ventricular mass updated to include a descriptive evaluation of left ventricular hypertrophy and relative wall thickening (normal, concentric remodeling, concentric hypertrophy, or eccentric hypertrophy).
• Calculation of pulmonary vascular resistance updated to reflect the most recent research, along with a descriptive evaluation of the calculated PVR (normal, borderline-elevated, elevated, or markedly elevated).
• Option added to "My Library" to import images from the clipboard, allowing transfer of pictures from image-editing applications.
